It's such a thing with gravel pits: Gravel is just as needed as space for backfilling, but they are usually not welcome on site.

The Warngau municipal council has given an application for the operation of a mine near Krottenthal a basket - despite supporters.

Warngau

- excavation, gravel extraction, backfilling, recultivation: A company has submitted an application to operate a gravel pit for an area on the B 318 at the level of the Krottenthal industrial park in Waakirchen, where a gravel pit is already in operation to the north. On the opposite side of the street, on Warngauer Flur, gravel deposits lie dormant under an agriculturally used meadow, which are to be exploited while the pit is to be filled.

Mayor Klaus Thurnhuber (FWG) had prepared and read out the draft of a statement from the municipality: The project “cannot be approved”, it says.

The municipality mainly leads the landscape protection area into the field in which the area is located;

an exemption from this should not be granted, a consultation with the lower nature conservation authority at the district office revealed.

Location at the "gateway to the Tegernsee valley"

The location, as the town hall chief continued, "in a prominent location at the gateway to the Tegernsee valley" and without natural greening, is not suitable.

In short: the pit is not wanted here.

“At the exposed point, I don't think it's expedient to tear a hole in the landscape,” says Thurnhuber.

Florian Rank (FWG) saw it “completely differently”.

After all, gravel is in great demand as a raw material and can only be extracted where it occurs.

Apart from that, pits are needed for overburden - also close to the town: "We are talking about sustainability, and then we cart the dirt through all of Germany."

He even thinks the area is ideal, said Rank: “It is right on the main road, and there is gravel there.” Max Bauer (FWG) also agreed.

“A gravel pit is a temporary thing.

Of course it takes years, but then it becomes grassland again. ”Adolf Schwarzer (CSU) was also able to make friends with the location.

“It hurts us less as a community than the other gravel pit,” he alluded to the existing pit on Ahornallee.

"The problem is what is backfilled"

In particular, the experience with the existing gravel pit on Warngauer Flur, where the community no longer had any opportunity to intervene in changes in the operation, which the district office as the competent authority approved on the administrative route, left with Reinhard Bücher (Greens) and Engelfried Beilhack (CSU), for example Alarm bells ring. “The problem is not the gravel that comes out, but what is filled in,” warned Beilhack. This also convinced Harald Stanke (FWG), who initially wanted to endorse the pit: "Up to a third of the track ballast should be backfilled - I'm afraid that the groundwater could be contaminated."

Rank tried to dispel such concerns: "You only drive into a gravel pit what is permitted," he emphasized.

“The times when you could cut every graffel are definitely over.

There is no hazardous waste in there. "

The majority was not convinced: The municipal council rejected the application with 10: 6 votes.
