Because of the participation in strike actions, Edeka and Primark in Lower Saxony have reduced the Christmas bonus of numerous employees according to union information.

Hanover - Because of the participation in strike actions, two retail chains in Lower Saxony have cut numerous employees' Christmas bonuses, according to the union.

And that in times when there is a kind of corona chaos in the state and nobody knows exactly which corona rules still apply in Lower Saxony and yet 2G-Plus is the norm almost everywhere.

About 150 employees of the company Edeka Minden-Hanover and the textile retailer Primark in Hanover are affected, said the Verdi union on Monday.

The cuts amounted to up to 300 euros gross.

Edeka and Primark cut Christmas bonus: "Take back the penalty immediately"

"We call on the companies to withdraw this punitive measure immediately," said Sabine Gatz, the regional head of trade at Verdi in Lower Saxony and Bremen.

The workforce had held back during their strikes in the collective bargaining round in the summer because of Corona.

Individuals should not be punished for their commitment to colleagues.

While customers at discounters and supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl, Penny or Rewe are wondering whether 5D is a new corona rule, they have to be prepared for a possible partial lockdown with tightened contact restrictions or are particularly concerned about how to make Christmas as safe as possible can shape, some Edeka and Primark employees grapple with completely different problems.

Edeka and Primark cut Christmas bonus: Verdi should pay compensation

A company spokeswoman for Edeka Minden-Hannover did not confirm the information, but referred to the collective agreement with Verdi.

After that, Christmas bonuses are only paid for each full month of employment.

Strike days, like other unpaid days of absence, did not count as working time.

Therefore, the claim to Christmas bonus expires for these months.

The unions are obliged to pay strike failure payments, said the Edeka spokeswoman.

"We therefore assume that the unions will also pay the loss allowance if the portion of the Christmas bonus is lost."

A spokeswoman for Primark said the company pays its employees a bonus for every full month they work at the company.

"Times for which there is no entitlement to wages will not be taken into account." Statements that, given the current corona situation in the state and the wrong ways of politics, hope to steer a safe course through the fourth and fifth waves with Omikron.

Christmas bonus reduced: Away from the corona situation, employees from Edeka and Primark hope for the Verdi union

The new Omikron virus variant has already "arrived" in Lower Saxony and is one of the main reasons that the Verden district has developed into Lower Saxony's corona hotspot at a rapid pace.

The only thing that helps at Christmas is testing, while the hopes of the Primark and Edeka employees should only rest on the Verdi union.

Edeka and Primark cut Christmas bonuses: “formulation gap” - regulation only exists in Lower Saxony

Verdi admitted that there was - as it was said - a “wording gap” in the collective agreement for Lower Saxony. It makes it possible to apply the reductions for periods of unpaid leave or long-term illnesses to those taking part in a strike. However, the sides agreed orally in the collective bargaining not to do this. The regulation exists in retail nationwide only in Lower Saxony, said Verdi.

A regulation that clearly shows that employees in Lower Saxony not only have to deal with the announced Christmas rest including warning level 3, the confusion about 2G in retail and the overturned Corona judgment with 2G at hairdressers before Christmas, but also outside of the opening times at Christmas in the supermarket and the wrong dish as a holiday feast still have some unpleasant things on the Christmas list.
