A last-minute diplomatic effort in an attempt to prevent an escalation of the crisis in Eastern Europe took place today between Western leaders and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
US President Joe Biden tonight spoke with Putin in a conversation whose results have not yet been announced.
Earlier, talks were held between French President Emmanuel Macron and Putin.
Macron told the Russian president that the military buildup was inconsistent with a sincere attempt to negotiate.
However, a senior official in the president's office said there were no indications from the conversation that Russia intended to attack.
Following the two talks, Macron and Biden will hold a discussion between them, in which Ukrainian President Vladimir Zalansky and German Chancellor Olaf Schultz are also expected to attend.
