Ukraine war: horrors without end

Russia's attack on neighboring Ukraine has been going on for five days. Between the flight of the civilian population and the destruction of the cities, the parties sit at the negotiating table for the first time.

Way into the unknown:

In wintry temperatures, people are trying to flee the Ukrainian city of Lviv.

According to UN figures, more than half a million people have left Ukraine since the Russian invasion began.

"More than 500,000 refugees have now fled Ukraine to neighboring countries," UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi wrote on Twitter.

Full train stations:

The number of people who want to leave the country is growing.

According to an earlier count by the UN refugee agency UNHCR, more than 280,000 people have already crossed the Polish border.
