Thousands leave the Ukrainian capital by train on Monday to seek safety from Russian attacks elsewhere.
Russia had announced a temporary ceasefire and people are taking the moment to go to western Ukraine or neighboring European countries.
SPIEGEL reporter Christoph Reuter also has to leave Kyiv.
Christoph Reuter, DER SPIEGEL:
"We are standing here in Holosiivskyi Park in the south of Kiev, one of the most peaceful corners of the city, and are leaving Kiev after almost a week. It's a strange feeling. Many people we met from the territorial Army going to any fronts in Irpin, in the northern suburb, where fighting has basically been going on since the beginning of the war. Many say goodbye and you don't know if they will still be alive in a week or two."
On Tuesday, people also fled other Ukrainian cities.
We are from Irpin, about 30 kilometers northwest of Kyiv.
Russia had promised to open escape corridors to safely evacuate civilians from Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Mariupol and Kyiv.
Christoph Reuter, DER SPIEGEL:
"It's a divided city that's trying to maintain a bit of normality, but doesn't know how long that will last. And it's one of the first reasonably warm days, and there are even people outside going for a walk and sit on park benches. That, too, is Kiev."
But many people try to escape the war.
According to conservative estimates, the Russian attack has already claimed more than 400 civilian lives.
The third round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine failed again.
The foreign ministers of both countries are to meet in Turkey on Thursday for a fourth round.
