As the Head of State is the head of the armed forces and of diplomacy, a presidential election is always an opportunity to rethink the priorities of France's foreign policy.
Obviously, the first subject will be that of the defense of Europe against the military aggressiveness of Russia, the technological plunder of China, the legal and financial hegemony of America.
To have a chance of countering these three monsters, France will not be able to do without European leverage.
This will take time because, at 27 members, the European Union has become an extremely heavy machine.
But, immediately, France could, alone, relaunch its Arab policy.
Water has flowed under the bridge since Charles de Gaulle made his own on June 29, 1967, just after the third Arab-Israeli conflict.
Healed from the wounds of the war in Algeria and anxious to display a policy of balance in the Middle East, France extended its hand to all the Arab nations.
It worked just as well...
