South African President Cyril Ramaphosa today declared a state of national disaster, a week after devastating floods hit the country's east coast, killing 443 people.
"The Cabinet decided to declare a state of national disaster after the floods left a humanitarian catastrophe in the country," Ramaphosa was quoted by AFP as saying.
And the country's army deployed about 10 thousand elements in the affected areas, especially in the Durban region, to help its residents who are deprived of electricity and water.
The floods destroyed about four thousand homes and damaged more than 13,500, which led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people, and in some areas, water and electricity were cut off.
