(CNN) --

Taco Bell will offer Mexican Pizza again, after suspending it for about two years.

The beloved dish will make a permanent comeback on the menu beginning May 19, the chain confirmed Monday.

Taco Bell eliminated pizza in November 2020 as part of a broader reorganization of its menu during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which led fast-food chains to shed certain complexities and costs.

The Mexican Pizza consists of a tortilla with beans or ground beef, a pizza sauce and covered with another tortilla with more sauce, cheese and chopped tomatoes.

Taco Bell introduced this product in 1985 and originally called it "Pizzazz Pizza".

Mexican Pizza returns to Taco Bell on May 19.

Removing the Mexican Pizza sparked outrage among loyal Taco Bell fans.

An online petition demanding the return of pizza has garnered nearly 200,000 signatures.

Indian Americans were especially outraged because they considered pizza one of the few "fun" vegetarian options.

Recognizing this, Taco Bell turned to petition creator Krish Jagirdar to celebrate the return of pizza.

"Like many American Indians who grew up vegetarian, we had limited access to 'fun' fast food, so Taco Bell became a bridge to American culture for many kids like me who grew up in immigrant homes. ", he said in a press release.

Taco Bell also improved product packaging.

Previously, the elimination of the pizza packaging involved more than 2 million kilos of cardboard per year.

The brand said in the statement that it has "worked to streamline operations and ingredient sourcing while leaving a lighter footprint at the same time."

The Mexican Pizza is $4.49 and Taco Bell loyalty program members can order it two days before they return.

That is, from May 17.

Fast food chains must constantly compete for money and customer attention.

In that sense, special offers are a way of trying to break through so many options.

Taco Bell, in particular, regularly experiments with its menu by adding limited-time offers to stimulate customer interest.

The approach seems to work.

Yum Brands, which owns Taco Bell, said same-store sales rose 8% in its most recent quarter.
