Opinion | Between a honeymoon and a crisis, Jordan is the good neighbor Israel today

2022-04-23T20:40:17.108Z

Both in crises and in the warming of relations - Israel has no more reliable security partner in the area around us than Jordan, or more precisely - in its security and military mechanisms.

In the midst of last winter, it seemed that spring had reached early Israeli-Jordanian relations.

A series of visits and meetings between King Abdullah and senior Israeli officials, in which President Herzog, Prime Minister Bennett and Ministers Ganz and Lapid, created an imaginary feeling of warming.

But in the moment of truth, the riots erupted on the Temple Mount, where Jordan and exposed its ugly face, while senior officials in the kingdom competed among themselves in profanity and incitement against Israel.

But just as you should not have smelled the short honeymoon - there is also nothing to get excited about from the current crisis.

This is Jordan and it always has been, and this is the pattern of our relationship with it since time immemorial, even before the signing of the peace agreement between the two countries in October 1994.

And for those who need it - here's a reminder of the past.

On the eve of the Yom Kippur War, King Hussein, King Abdullah's father, cried out to warn Israel that Egypt and Syria were about to launch an offensive against it.

In Israel, as is well known, no one was willing to listen to him.

Later, when the war broke out, Hussein was careful to keep quiet along his border with Israel, but sent one of his armored brigades to help the Syrians.

By the way, three years earlier, in the summer of 1970, the Syrians attacked Jordan, but this attack was stopped after Israel sent a secret message to Damascus that if the Syrians did not withdraw their forces from Jordan - the IDF would attack them.

The reality is clear to all, and at least to those who want to see it not through the pink glasses of a political or political novice.

Israel has no more reliable security partner in the area around us than Jordan, or rather - more than the Jordanian security and military apparatus.

At the same time, few can compete with the hostility of public opinion in Jordan, which is fueled and fueled by venomous media outlets and politicians who spread hatred and call for violence.

"Jordan is Palestine" she said attributed to Ariel Sharon, but the truth is that the one who drowned her was Abdullah I, King Hussein's grandfather, when he annexed Judea and Samaria to his kingdom and stated that there are no Palestinians, and that everyone is now Jordanian.

He was followed, years later, by Yasser Arafat, who sought to take over Jordan as part of Palestine.

This past haunts the kingdom to this day, as a significant portion of its population is of Palestinian descent.

But over the years, the Jordanians' way of dealing with this reality is by releasing steam in the direction of Israel, or rather - pouring oil on the fire in the hope that the public will turn their rage on economic distress, corruption at the top and the lack of democracy in Israel's direction. Of the Jordanian regime from home.

The relationship with Jordan is a relationship of interests, security and even economic.

They have significant advantages for Israel, chief among them the ability to rely on Jordan as the one who secures our border to the east in the face of the threat of radical Islam, and of course - Iran as well.

At the same time, this cooperation is also a first-rate Jordanian security and existential interest.

It would not hurt to respond from time to time to the Jordanian attacks, because we also need to release steam.

But on second thought, it is doubtful if Jordan is as important as it is trying to present itself, and as long as the caravan continues on its way - the dogs can bark.
