The front page of the Courrier International told the whole story: In a cartoon published before the second round of the 2002 presidential election, an aired man wearing a beret and a mustache, holding a baguette under his armpit that resembles a hand raised, holding a bottle of wine with a swastika at the bottom.
The headline: "France, Europe and the world are looking at you."
The message was clear: Jean-Marie Le Pen should not be allowed to win this election.
The implicit message was more serious: those who vote for her, from the far-right National Front party, are those who belong to popular France, the one that does not live in Paris and its suburbs.
The so-called "deep France".
Then yes today, the Le Pen family qualified for the second round of the presidential election.
In 2002 it was Jean-Marie, and today it is his daughter, Marin.
As then, the elite mocked its voters and reduced them to racist fascists, a herd of undeveloped nationalist baboons.
As then, the media and cultural elite ignored the cries of "deep France" and eliminated its needs.
The result of that disregard is Le Pen's phenomenal rise in the last decade.
Following the announcement of the victory of French President Emanuel Macron, who was elected to another term on Sunday, the tweeters were quick to speak of "discriminating" against his opponent.
Well, not as she shouted.
This is a bitter victory that does not bode well.
Marin Le Pen got 41.8% of the vote compared to 58.2% for Macron.
It is easiest - and most politically correct - to say that those 42% who voted for La Pen on Sunday are anti-Semites and racists.
It is common to call them derogatory names.
Caressing the media to be portrayed as "on the right side of history", as determined by the Thought Police.
It is more complex to listen to contemptuous voices to the dance of progress imposed on them from above.
Voices for which the term "homeland" is still sacred.
Voices that refuse to look at reality through postmodern glasses.
Voices of people hurt, in pain unrelated to the discussion of gender or the climate crisis and other issues that star in progressive priorities.
And back to Israel: no one has been able to tattoo our solid national identity.
Most of the people are patriotic, proud of their homeland and country, and willing to serve it and even send their children into battle.
But - and here the red lights of the ultra-Orthodox for the fate of the state should be lit - there is a media-cultural-political elite that is rushing towards progressiveness, or is already deep in its mud.
An elite that is nationalistic, unable to call the enemy by its name, tries to undermine Jewish values and replace them with universal so-called cold values, which means erasing the Jewish identity of the state.
The immense anger displayed towards the current government finds its roots in precisely this place.
