Ukrainian President Vladimir Zlansky said in an interview published today (Friday) in the American magazine Time that Russia had shelled a compound where he was staying during the first hours of the invasion of Ukraine.
According to Zelsky, he and his family awoke to the bombing noises of the Russian forces advancing to where they were staying.
The Ukrainian president recounted how he woke up his children along with his wife.
"It was noisy. There were explosions," he said in an interview.
In addition, a military intelligence officer told the magazine that two attempts had been made to storm the compound.
"It was an absolute madhouse," the officer said.
According to the American magazine, military advisers told the Ukrainian president that a Russian unit had been sent to capture him.
There were also rumors that a Kremlin puppet government would be formed to replace the ousted government.
At the beginning of the war in Ukraine Zalansky refused proposals from US and British forces to rescue him and his men from the country. Instead, he remained in Kiev and became a symbol of resistance to Russia.
