Meters away, the flames struck early on Sunday morning from a balcony in Schwabing.

For reasons that are still unclear, fire broke out in an apartment building.

Thanks to neighbor Sebastian W. (64), a young couple where the fire broke out could be saved.

Munich - "I'm glad I could help," says Sebastian W. (64).

The lifeguard seemed completely relaxed when our newspaper found him in his apartment on Sunday morning – barely five hours after a dangerous fire in Schwabing.

When he saw the flames blazing, Sebastian W. didn't hesitate for a second.

"I immediately ran over to the neighbors and rang the bell.

Fortunately, they woke up and left their apartment immediately," says the man from Schwabing.

A fire broke out in an apartment building in Ohmstraße on Sunday morning for reasons that are still unclear.

Within minutes, clouds of dark smoke were billowing from the balcony on the second floor.

Thanks to Sebastian W., no one was seriously injured - he's the lifesaver next door.

Munich: Pensioners saved couples from flames or suffocation

According to the fire department, the pensioner woke the young couple who lives next door and saved them from death by fire or asphyxiation.

The emergency services praised his behavior as “exemplary”.

Several residents had previously dialed the emergency call around 6.40 a.m. – because the couple’s balcony was already blazing.

Munich: The fire apartment in Schwabing is completely destroyed

Luckily no one was injured.

"When the alerted fire engine arrived, the entire building had already been cleared," said the fire brigade.

But because the fire on the balcony had already spread into the apartment and the balcony above, more workers had to be requested.

The fire brigade initiated the extinguishing attack with a so-called pincer attack.

With the help of the turntable ladder, she was able to contain the flames on the outside, and the stairwell was also used to extinguish the flames.

The rescue workers worked non-stop for an hour and a half.

When our newspaper was there yesterday, it was a terrible sight: parts of the back of the building were rusty, and the apartment was completely destroyed by the fire.

“Fortunately, everyone got away with it.

I'm glad I could help," says Sebastian W., who has lived in the house for 26 years.

The couple is now staying with friends.

The police department is now investigating the cause of the fire.

Munich: The fire brigade was in continuous use at the weekend

The fire in Schwabing was just one of many operations that the fire brigade had to deal with over the weekend.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday evening, a home for assisted living in Valpichlerstraße burned down.

The emergency services had to treat more than 20 people, after which six residents were taken to the hospital.

On Sunday night at around 4.43 a.m., a garden shed caught fire in the Mayor-Keller-Strasse in Kirchtrudering.

A tree fell on two cars in Laim on Friday.

Schrobenhausener Strasse was closed for an hour from 1 p.m.
