(CNN Spanish) --

The United States extradited the former governor of Chihuahua César Duarte, the Mexican secretariat reported.

Duarte, who governed Chihuahua between 2010 and 2016, was arrested in Florida in July 2020 after an arrest warrant issued by the Mexican authorities, who accuse him of the alleged crimes of embezzlement and criminal association.

In November 2021, a Florida court approved the extradition of the former official.

Although a statement from the Foreign Ministry only identifies him as "Cesar D", the current president of that state and the Mexican press report that he is the former official.

In the statement, the Mexican authorities point out that between 2011 and 2014 Duarte allegedly diverted public funds for more than US$4.9 million at current exchange rates.

CNN is trying to contact Duarte's defense for comment.

In the past, the former governor has denied the accusations and has said that he is the victim of political persecution.

The governor of Chihuahua, María Eugenia Campos Galván, was pleased with the extradition of the former official and said that in this case "there will be neither forgiveness nor forgetting."

Through a video published on social networks, Campos Galván said that, regarding the extradition of the former official, she celebrated "that in this way, the judicial process can be carried out in Mexico so that justice is done" and added that she has ordered the prosecutor of the State to attend in a "meticulous" way the investigation folders.
