Suffren-class submarines are nuclear attack submarines (SNAs).
Their mission is to strengthen the naval component of nuclear deterrence at least until 2060, replacing the Rubis class submarines, built between 1976 and 1990.
Advantageous dimensions
In terms of dimensions, the Suffren outclasses its predecessor in every way.
It is 99 meters long (76 meters for the Rubis), by 8.8 in diameter for a diving weight of 5,300 tonnes (compared to 2,600 tonnes for the Rubis).
It will have an autonomy of 70 days where the Ruby lasted 45 days at sea, and will be able to carry 50% more weapons.
Its diving depth is more than 350 meters.
Its theoretical maximum speed is greater than 23 knots when diving (approximately 43 km/h).
High-tech equipment
The Suffren is notably equipped with an X-bar equipped with 4 rudders, visible at the rear of the device.
A device to improve maneuverability and immersion resistance.
