Ann Turner Cook, whose cartoon portrait was pasted into jars of Gerber baby food, has died at the age of 95, CNN reported yesterday (Saturday).

The Gerber Company announced its death on Friday.

"Many years before she became an extraordinary mother, teacher and writer, her smile and expressive curiosity won hearts everywhere. She will continue to live as a symbol for all babies," the company said.

"We send our condolences to Ann's family, and to anyone who has had the privilege of knowing her."

The logo, which was based on a portrait of Cook, has accompanied the food company for more than ninety years, since 1931, and originated in a competition announced by the company to find a baby that would fit its campaign.

A neighbor of the Cook family submitted a drawing of the baby's face as part of the competition, and promised to turn it into a painting if she won.

The judges of the competition chose a portrait and decided that it would remain a registration.

The portrait has become the official logo of the company, and a symbol familiar to billions of consumers.

Despite her great publicity and worldwide circulation the portrait won, Cook's identity was kept secret.

Only in 1978 was the identity of Cook revealed, who in her adulthood engaged in teaching and writing thrillers and lived in Florida.
