United Kingdom: Boris Johnson survives a vote of no confidence in his Conservative Party

2022-06-06T20:40:27.072Z

Weakened for months by the “Partygate” and its cascading revelations, the British Prime Minister faced a vote on Monday evening

Boris Johnson is now quiet for a whole year, at least within his party.

The British Prime Minister, subjected this Monday evening to a vote of no confidence from the deputies of the Conservative Party, finally won their confidence, with 211 votes against 148. Thus, he cannot be targeted by another motion of no confidence for a year.

On Monday morning, Conservative MPs had tabled a motion to implement this vote.

It took 54 letters from MPs to trigger it.

"The threshold of 15% of parliamentarians requesting a vote of confidence from the leader of the Conservative Party has been exceeded," said Graham Brady, chairman of the committee responsible for internal organizational matters, in a press release.

“Draw a line and move on”

"(The vote) tonight offers an opportunity to put an end to months of speculation and allow the government to draw a line and move on by responding to the priorities of the population", had reacted the spokesperson for Boris Johnson in a statement.

“The Prime Minister welcomes the opportunity to present his case to MPs and will remind them that there is no more formidable political force than when they are united and focused on the issues that matter to voters .

Boris Johnson is weakened by months of holiday scandals in Downing Street during lockdowns.

The famous "Partygate", as well as the soaring prices which are causing a historic drop in household purchasing power, have already caused its popularity to plummet, leading to heavy setbacks for the Conservatives in local elections at the beginning of May.

The Prime Minister maintained his position by notably highlighting his leading role in the Western response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Far from putting an end to the scandal that has plagued the Conservative government for six months, the publication last week of an administrative report detailing the extent of breaches of anti-Covid rules at Downing Street has prompted new calls for the resignation, announced in dribs and drabs.

Boris Johnson, himself subject to a fine (unheard of for a Prime Minister in office), said he assumed "full responsibility for everything that happened" but felt he had to "continue" his work.
