Boris Johnson survived an internal party vote of confidence much narrower than expected. As is so often the case, the British prime minister has interpreted the political setback in his own unique way.

»In the vote of confidence, 211 MPs voted for Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, there were 148 votes against.

So I can announce that the party has confidence in Boris Johnson.”

Narration text:

Boris Johnson has once again managed to save himself politically, at least for the time being.

But the demonstrative celebration of his supporters cannot hide the reality of a deeply divided conservative party.

The internal party vote of no confidence due to the Partygate revelations was even worse than in 2019 with Theresa May – and she had to go a few months later.

But that doesn't bother the British Prime Minister.

Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of Great Britain

“I think that this is a very good outcome for politics and for the country... I think it's a compelling outcome, a crucial outcome and it means that as a government we're going to move on and focus on things that I think are really important to people.«

Johnson is not deterred by critical questions either:

"Do you really think that's a determined result? Theresa May did a lot better than you and your allies wanted to get rid of May in a hurry. How can you go on?"

Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of Great Britain

“For example, I have a much larger mandate from my own parliamentary colleagues than I had in 2019... and I am grateful and appreciative of the colleagues for the support they have given me.

And of course I know that we need to come together now as a government and as a party, and that's what we can do now."

UK newspapers call Johnson a "wounded victor".

Two and a half years ago, he triumphantly won the general election. Now the British prime minister must expect his renegade party friends to try to block him in parliament and thus force him to withdraw.
