Opinion Shaked's final chord Israel today

2022-07-26T07:07:03.235Z

Ayelet Shaked has a chance to sit down with dignity on the bench, if she announces that she is withdrawing from the race so as not to burn votes for the right • An ideological closing chord that may one day allow her to return

Four years ago I appeared before people whose homes in the Netiv Avot neighborhood in Elazar were destroyed in one of the worst decisions in the history of the High Court of Justice.

The ruins, both physical and mental, were visible.

At the end of the show, one of them helped me carry my equipment to the car.

I asked him, following this crisis, who he would vote for in the elections, and he answered without hesitation: "Where is Ayelet - that's where I am, she's the only one doing something."

Shaked, as the Minister of Justice, was the realization of the dream of many right-wing people: the smart move of making an alliance with the head of the Bar Association at the time, Efi Neve, in order to create a majority in the committee for appointing judges, created the feeling that finally there is a right-wing that knows not only how to be elected, but also how to rule.

While Communications Minister Gilad Erdan, one of Likud's senior leaders, founded a broadcasting corporation and with the characteristic clumsiness of a right-wing government ruling over him the veterans of the Galach, Shaked engaged in the Sisyphean work of changing the DNA of the justice system quietly, and still without the provocation of the unnecessary perfume video, which came a little later .

What is no less important - in the eyes of its supporters, of which I was one - is that its hawkish, determined and efficient right wing was born in Tel Aviv and was also committed to the liberal values that the Tel Aviv metropolis represents in Israeli society.

How did Shaked lose the high status she had in the summer of 2018, when many saw her as a potential successor to Netanyahu, and can she still do something about it?

The main and first error was that she read the first line of Netanyahu's indictment as a letter and a slogan: "The State of Israel against Benjamin Netanyahu."

The vast majority of the right - some from the first moment and some slowly, as the facts in the thousands of cases became clear, read it differently: "the State of Israel against the people of Israel".

The Netanyahu trial is the winning proof that the right knows how to get elected, but does not know how to govern.

The tail of Israeli society - its elites of the past - is wagging the dog.

And precisely Shaked, who represented the hope for change, cooperated with what the majority of the right identifies as a "judicial coup" concocted by these elites, and joined the "government of change".

In doing so, she dug her own political grave with her own hands, mainly to arrange for Levant his own grave plot on Mount Herzl after one hundred and twenty years.

Then came the illusion that she could pull the blanket to the right side while going to bed with Horowitz, Michaeli, Abbas and Gantz.

It turned out that they know how to pull the blanket just as well as she does.

It started with Horowitz's training of the chametz in the Pesach hospitals and ended with the disaster of illegal Palestinian construction training in Area C by Gantz.

Faced with the wave of armed terrorism in the heart of Israel's cities, which arose precisely when the Islamic movement sits in a coalition and receives huge budgets, the "stomachaches" that Shaked made sure to report to the public became pathetic day by day.

But the third error Shaked can still correct.

Shikli and Davidi immediately withdrew from the coalition, so Ravev did not stick to them.

Silman, who was the chairman of the coalition, made Shaked a school and registered her abortion in her name. Shaked missed those trains, but she has one last chance to sit down with dignity on the bench and wait for better days, instead of being thrown home in shame. This will happen if she announces that she withdrawing from the race so as not to burn votes for the right. This would be an ideological closing chord that would honor her career and perhaps allow her to one day return in the post-Netanyahu era.

But Shaked should hurry: Handel, Hauser and even Matan Kahana, to whom it is difficult to attribute any ideology, may steal this momentum from her as well.

The guy who helped me carry the equipment, won't vote for "where Ayelet will be" now.

I really hope for her sake that he remembers her coming off the stage with an elegant bow, and not in shame.
