The queen died alongside her family on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at her summer residence in Balmoral, in the north of Scotland.

A national mourning has been decreed, opening a historical sequence which has been painstakingly prepared for years, known by the code name “London Bridge” to which was added “Operation Unicorn”, since the sovereign died in Scotland, which requires his repatriation to London, more than 600 km as the crow flies.

All the details are however not fixed, they will be finalized by the new king Charles III.

According to British media and agencies, here is the countdown of events that could follow until the state funeral at Westminster Abbey, probably Monday, September 19, before the burial of the Queen at Windsor Castle.

Friday, September 9

King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla who have spent the night at Balmoral, where the Queen rests, return to London.

The final details of the funeral are decided, as well as the duration of the national mourning.

Saturday September 10

The Accession Council, a group of dignitaries, meets in the morning at Saint James's Palace in London and proclaims that Charles has become king.

Parliament pledges allegiance and expresses condolences.

Sunday September 11

The Queen's coffin leaves Balmoral Castle, by road to Aberdeen from where it is then transported to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the monarch's official residence in Edinburgh.

The sovereign's body is guarded by the Royal Company of Archers.

Monday September 12

A procession winds its way up the historic town's row of streets on the Royal Mile to St. Giles Cathedral, the site of a religious ceremony with family members.

The public should have the opportunity to come and pay their respects in front of the coffin.

Tuesday September 13

From Edinburgh's Waverley Station, Her Majesty's body is taken by the Royal East Coast Train to London and then on to Buckingham Palace.

The crowd should be able to gather on the platforms of the stations crossed by the convoy along the entire length of the route.

If this operation is not made possible, the plane could replace the railway.

Wednesday September 14

A procession, the first major military parade since her death, leads the Queen's body from Buckingham to the Palace of Westminster in central London.

The Queen rests in Westminster Hall for a few days on a purple-draped catafalque.

The public will be able to come and gather there 23 hours a day. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected.

Monday, September 19

On the day of the state funeral, the coffin is taken to Westminster Abbey where the ceremony takes place in the presence of some 2,000 people, including dignitaries from around the world.

Two minutes of silence will be observed at noon across the country.

Finally, after the ceremony, the Queen will be buried privately in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where she will be reunited with her parents and sister.

The coffin of her husband, Prince Philip, who died last year, will be moved there to be by his side.
