A female cyclist in her 40s was seriously injured today (Saturday) in a hit-and-run accident on Highway 4 near the Silver intersection in the Ashkelon area.
The woman was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene and was taken to Barzilai Hospital.
Following the accident, the Israel Police opened an investigation into the case, at which time the suspicion arose that it was a hit-and-run accident.
In the extensive searches conducted by the police, they were able to locate the vehicle suspected of being involved, abandoned near the settlements in the south.
Later, the police were able to trace the escape route of the suspect, a 20-year-old resident of the Bedouin diaspora, and he was arrested for questioning near the Shokat intersection.
MDA paramedic, Avital Kabsha, said: "The injured woman was lying on the road unconscious and suffering from a multi-system injury.
We gave her initial medical treatment that included immobilization, stopping bleeding and drug treatment and evacuated her for further treatment in the hospital when her condition is serious."
