Following the first rains: waste and black mud on the beaches of Tel Aviv | Israel today

2022-10-26T19:09:02.787Z

The precipitation that fell this week flowed onto the city's shores dirt, oil from the roads and pollution • Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality: "This year we expanded the preparations to ease the load on the infrastructure in extreme rain situations - but it is not possible to completely prevent the flooding in cases of very strong rain intensity in a short time"

The rainy season has begun, and the first precipitation that flows into the sea brings with it filth found in the streets, which at the end of the day, spills onto the beaches we spend time on throughout the year: waste that people throw into the drains, oils from the roads, rubber remains from worn tires, animal excrement - all these merge with water the sea, and create pollution.

Every year the "Tzulul" association, which works for the protection of the sea and beaches, appeals to the local authorities with the demand to prepare for the winter season and thereby prevent flooding, damage and pollution of the city streets, the sea and the streams.

Some authorities respond to the request and prepare accordingly, while others do not and cause severe public and private damages that create economic and environmental damage.

How should the authorities prepare?

First, they must clean the drainage canals and their openings from debris that accumulated during the summer.

Another thing, they must increase the cleaning of the roads and sidewalks from single-use plastic, dust, cigarette butts and animal excrement, collect solid waste from the stream channels and canals - bottles, bags and plastic waste;

to enforce on the public the disconnection of the gutters from the drainage and sewage systems, and to direct the water to gardens and permeable areas;

Set up waste receptacles at the openings of the drainage pipes and take care of their maintenance and emptying.

The preparation is particularly important especially regarding the first rain of the winter, which sweeps into the streams and the sea a lot of pollution that accumulated on the city streets during the summer: fuel, oils, heavy metals, cigarette butts, waste and more.

These pollute the streams, the bathing beaches, harm marine life and flora and harm the health of bathers, surfers and other winter athletes.

The Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality stated: "The municipality prepares almost every year for the winter and gives top priority to preventing rainwater flooding this season. Over the past few years, work has been carried out to upgrade the municipal drainage system and the sewage system by adding drainage lines and rainwater absorption points. The municipality has invested dozens Millions of shekels in a series of projects throughout the city to improve and develop the canalization system to prevent flooding as a result of rainwater, with special emphasis on Jaffa and the neighborhoods in the south of the city and in the east."

"This year, the municipality's preparations were expanded beyond the current works and one-off projects were carried out that will ease the load on the city's infrastructure in extreme rain situations. Similar to last year, unexpected amounts of precipitation may fall this year as well. However, it is important to remember that flooding cannot be completely prevented In cases of very strong rain intensity in a short time."
