What is chosen in these general elections?

On November 8, the state of New York will elect several public officials.

And one of the most important races is that of governor, which faces Governor Kathy Hochul, who is seeking her re-election, and Lee Zeldin, a Republican candidate, who, if elected, would be the first from that party in two decades.

  • This is how Kathy Hochul and Lee Zeldin are, candidates for governor in New York

Positions such as US senators, representatives to the House of Representatives, state senators, state representatives, attorney general, state comptroller, state Supreme Court judges and local court judges will also be elected.

In addition, they will vote:

  • An amendment to the Environmental Bonds Act to "address and combat the impact of climate change and damage to the environment."

The question must be answered yes or no: do you authorize the sale of state bonds for up to US$4.2 billion to finance environmental protection, natural restoration, resilience and clean energy projects?

  • A question about whether to "add a values statement to guide the government" of New York State.

  • A third question about whether racial equity plans are required throughout New York City.

  • And the fourth question is related to a measurement of the real cost of living in New York City.

New York Governor's Race

New York Democrats face an increasingly serious challenge this year from Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin, who is running against Governor Kathy Hochul amid heightened concern about crime, especially in New York City, and a broader pandemic malaise.

Hochul took office in August 2021, when now-former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran state politics for a decade, resigned after facing multiple sexual harassment allegations, all of which he denied, though nearly a dozen of them were corroborated by the investigation. from the Democratic state attorney general.

The Buffalo-born lieutenant governor, who was Cuomo's second during his time in office, had almost zero political branding in the downstate, especially in New York City, which has reliably delivered overwhelming margins for Democrats. in major ticket contests.

Zeldin, meanwhile, emerged from a spirited Republican primary in large part because of his unwavering alliance with former President Donald Trump and a steady base of support on East Long Island, where he has served as a member of Congress since 2015. That followed a stint in the State Senate beginning in 2011.

To many political observers, the general election was expected to be more of a coronation than a race for the state's first woman to be elected governor.

Hochul is a powerful fundraising figure with a good reputation among the party's moderate mainstream.

Zeldin hates to admit that Trump lost the 2020 election. Biden defeated the former president by almost 2 million votes in New York, more than 60% of the votes cast statewide.

But now that Election Day is just days away, recent polls have shown a close race.
