Allegations of extortion by threats and a direct fight: behind the heated race for the position of successor to the mythical mayor of Yavne | Israel today

2022-11-13T19:39:46.567Z

Last August Zvi Gov Ari passed away after a battle with illness • The city of Yavne is going to elections and is looking for a successor to the person who ruled the city for the past 24 years • A dramatic fight between three contenders: Mayor Haim Messing, Roi Gabbai and Shimon Asur

In recent years, the city has become one of the most developed in the country, ranking third in terms of positive immigration in the country and a center of settlement for young couples.

This coming Tuesday, three months after the passing of the late Zvi Gov Ari, the residents went out to elect a new mayor for the coming year.

We will remind that the Ministry of the Interior was assigned the task of appointing a replacement mayor, when the Minister of the Interior Ayelet Shaked exercised her authority and ordered the special elections to be held on November 15, 2022. Today, 3 days before Voter's Day, Chava will build a stormy election system and intense campaigns between the 3 candidates remaining in the race.

The candidates for the crown are Mayor Haim Messing and Councilors Roi Gabbai and Shimon Asor.

Messing was the right-hand man of Gov Ari - who ruled the city for 24 years - and was crowned as his successor.

Gabai, an educator and who served as the Chief of Staff of the Executive Director of the Jerusalem and Heritage Ministry resigned from the position to lead the city and attorney Shimon Asur who is trying to promote the project of the old neighborhoods.

And there is no doubt that this is an election campaign full of blood.

"Yavna is the most average city in Israel", that's how the peripheral city from the southern coastal plain was described in the comedy series "Zanzuri" that was broadcast in the past.

Yavne is a city of almost

A 7-kilometer stretch of beach is blocked from access, among other things, due to military considerations.

On the one hand it is a central city and on the other hand it is a city a bit far from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Even in sports, Maccabi Yavne, which was an empire in the 80s with intriguing players like Eli Derix, Benny Tabak and Bonnie Ginzburg, is currently faltering in League A South and in basketball the municipal team plays in the national league.

And despite this, young people are flocking to Birch in droves, prices are climbing.

"Did nothing but post and talk"

From a brief survey we conducted in the city, it was possible to understand where the wind is blowing, when the two candidates who are expected to go all the way are Messing and Gabbay.

The two were interviewed by "Israel Hayom" with dozens of activists by their side.

"Mr. Gabbay is proud of the mayors of Rashlat and Bashir who were deputies, but he did nothing but post and talk," Messing attacked his young opponent.

However, Gabbay replies that "the polls and the public show otherwise. I'm dealing with myself."

Even the parliamentarians who frequent almost every coffee shop in the city, were heard to be divided in their opinion as to who deserves the most votes.
