Three people were injured tonight (Friday) by an explosion in the city of Belgrade in Russia, near the border of Ukraine.

Later, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that it was a bombing by a fighter plane of the country's army, which accidentally dropped the bomb over the city.

The reports of the explosion in Belgorod, which has about 400,000 inhabitants, came for the first time during the night.

The videos circulated online showed that the explosion happened near a residential apartment block, causing panic in the area.

It also appears that smoke and flames were billowing near an intersection where traffic was operating at that time.

Suspicion of the circumstances of the explosion first fell on Ukraine.

Since the start of the war last year, Russian authorities have blamed Kiev for a series of covert attacks on railway bridges and other key targets in Belgrade.

Some of the city's residents said they feared the Ukrainians might even invade there.

Despite the speculation, the Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement this morning saying that the explosion was caused by an "accidental discharge of aviation munitions" by a Russian fighter jet flying over Belgrade yesterday evening.

The plane has been identified as a Su-34, which is considered one of the most advanced Russian aircraft.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgrade region, said three people were injured in the incident, including one who suffered a concussion.

The explosion shook the nearby residential building so much that the local authorities decided to evacuate it.

"Thank God no one was killed," Gladkov said.

The Ministry of Defense stated that the incident is under investigation.
