How the Met Gala Became New York's 'Party of the Year'

For some, Sunday night's event is to fashion what the Oscars are to movies. However, if it brings together stars from around the world, it does not reward anything or anyone. But then, what is it really for?


Sunday evening in New York, on the side of Fifth Avenue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art exceptionally closed its doors to the public to host the high fashion mass of the year: the Met Gala.

An evening broadcast in mondovision, which kicks off the spring exhibition of the Costume Institute, the fashion department of the New York museum, this year dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. Since its creation at the end of the 1940s, this exceptional event has therefore always celebrated fashion and those who make it, and this, for a good cause.

Without her, the Met Gala would not exist.

"Elle" is Eleanor Lambert, a formidable American publicist, who brought rain and shine to the fashion industry until her death in 2003.
