Update from May 8, 22:09 p.m.: New rains have delayed the start of Kyiv's expected offensive in southern Ukraine, according to Russian occupation authorities. "Once again, unstable damp weather has arrived. The soil must be ten to twelve centimeters dry so that the technology can roll over it," said the head of the administration of the Moscow-controlled part of Zaporizhzhia, Yevgeny Balitsky, on Russian television on Monday. Nevertheless, the counteroffensive "could start at any moment," he warned.

Russia apparently launches forced mobilization in occupied Mariupol

Update from May 8, 18:26 p.m.: In Russian-occupied Mariupol, the forced mobilization of residents apparently begins. This is reported by the Kyiv Independent with reference to the city administration. "Conscriptions have begun in Mariupol. The occupiers are already looking for citizens who have not fulfilled their 'conscription'. The enemy plans to draft the men by August. Russia continues to kill peaceful Ukrainians," said exiled Mayor Vadym Boichenko.

Update from May 8, 15:38 p.m.: "These recruits are likely to be sent to the frontline sectors in Ukraine, where the number of casualties is extremely high": Moscow is luring immigrants from Central Asia with high soldier pay and a fast-track procedure for naturalization – and is at least partially successful. This is what British intelligence services estimate in their latest Ukraine report, published by the Ministry of Defense in London.

Recruiters are on the move in mosques and immigration centers. Accordingly, advance bonuses of the equivalent of 2165 euros and a salary of up to 3770 euros per month are offered. The aim is to recruit 400,000 volunteers to work in the war of aggression against Ukraine. Why is the Russian Ministry of Defense making such an effort? "The authorities are almost certainly trying to delay any open forced mobilization as long as possible in order to minimize discontent in their own country," the British statement said.

Russia attacks numerous parts of Ukraine

First reported on May 8, 2023: Kyiv - Russia has once again shelled Kyiv in the Ukraine war. At least five people were injured as a result of a Russian airstrike on the capital. This was reported by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on Monday morning (8 May). The attack was carried out in part with drones. According to its own information, the Ukrainian Air Force was able to shoot down 30 unmanned aerial vehicles.

Airstrikes have also been reported from other parts of Ukraine in the war with Russia. According to local authorities, a food warehouse in Odessa caught fire. The attack there was carried out with a Russian Ch-22 cruise missile.

Russia launches airstrike on Kyiv

A total of ten areas in Ukraine are said to have been attacked during the attacks during the night and early morning hours. In addition to Kyiv, another 126 cities or settlements are said to have been hit. 28 people were injured and three were killed. This is reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on its Telegram channel.

Footage, which is said to have come from Kyiv, documents the massive destruction of the city in the Ukraine war. Footage from Susplina, Ukraine's public broadcaster, shows a high-rise building where three floors were hit. The broadcaster had published a video of the building on Twitter.

Czech Republic warns Kiev

As a result of Russia's attacks over the weekend, Petr Pavel sent an urgent warning to Kyiv on Sunday (7 May). According to the Czech president, Ukraine has lost the element of surprise of its spring offensive. This is reported by the British daily newspaper Guardian. Pavel is a retired general and was formerly NATO's main military adviser. According to the Czech president and highly decorated war hero, Ukraine still lacks the means for a successful counteroffensive in the fight against Russia, despite Western aid. "Apparently they still feel they don't have all the [necessary means to] launch a successful operation," Pavel told the Guardian. Kiev would have to prepare for "terrible losses" and could not afford a failure of the operation.
