Most popular baby first names 2022: Emilia and Noah back in first place

The latest list for the whole of Germany for 2022 was published on May 8, 2023. It turns out that not only do a few "old acquaintances" rank in the top ten of baby first names, but there is also a reunion with Emilia and Noah in the first places. They were also the most popular last year. And another trend is continuing: short, sonorous names for the little ones are still in vogue.

The favorite first letters are E, M and L. A total of 13 of the 20 top names begin with one of these letters. Even at the Kassel Hospital, where more and more babies are being born, new parents may often give names that begin with one of these letters.

So while Emilia landed on the winner's podium again in the newborn girls and Noah in the boys in 2022, there was a change in second place - at least in the female first names. Sophia slipped from third place and displaced Hanna from this place, who this time only made it to fifth place. Overall, however, the list is quite consistent.

Among the little boys, the front field was a bit more stable: Matteo and Leon were again the second and third places again this year. Behind them, there were no surprising changes among the young stars: Finn and Paul once again made it to fourth and fifth place.

The list of the most frequently assigned first names has been compiled and published by the Society for the German Language since 1977. In doing so, it relies on data from the registry offices, which transmit the individual names registered there. This time, more than 750 registry offices nationwide were involved – a total of almost one million names were collected for evaluation.

Most popular baby names 2022: similarities and differences in German-speaking countries

It is interesting to note that despite all the similarities, the taste in German-speaking countries still differs. In Austria, Emilia, Emma, Mia and Hanna as well as Paul, Elias, Leon and Noah are also among the top names. In the neighbouring country, however, longer and more consonant names such as Valentina, Maximilian and Tobias are also very popular. Such names usually don't even make it into the top 30 in Germany.

In Switzerland, too, names that are outside the top 30 in Germany made it into the top ten: Elena (50th place in Germany), Alina (53), Elin (154) and Malea (70) for girls and Nino (186) and Leano (89) for boys.
