2023-05-16T20:37:09.354Z

Highlights: Strawberries have a low energy content and a high nutrient content. They also have a high fiber content, which means that they are indigestible. With only 170 grams, you can cover the daily requirement recommended by the German Nutrition Society. The anthocyanins (plant pigment) present in the strawberry are said to play a significant role in this. One study found that regular consumption of strawberries can improve overall heart health and lower blood pressure. They are also said to have a cancer-protective effect.

The strawberry is a fruit with real superpowers: it is said to have many healing effects that benefit our health in many ways.

Berlin – Contrary to its name, the strawberry is not one of the berries, but one of the collective nut fruits. Because it is very low in calories and contains less fructose than many other types of fruit, it is a real vitamin bomb. According to fitforfun.de, strawberry can also help you lose weight. This is because it is rich in fiber, which on the one hand gives the body a feeling of satiety for a long time and on the other hand promotes digestion. At the same time, it has a low glycemic index. Fruit is generally considered healthy, but many contain an amount of fructose that should not be underestimated. Researchers at the University of Colorado investigated the role fructose plays as a trigger for dementia.

As the health insurance company AOK informs, strawberries containmany important ingredients, even though they consist of 90 percent water. With only 170 grams, you can cover the daily requirement recommended by the German Nutrition Society (DGE). Here you can find out what other health benefits strawberries have to offer and why they can prevent cancer.

Strawberries: A small fruit with many health benefits – even said to prevent cancer

There is much more to the red fruit than you think. As nutrition expert Dr. Volker Manz explains in an interview with RTL, strawberries have many health benefits. Below is a summary of the most important ones:

  • Strawberries have a low energy content and a high nutrient content.
  • They also have a high fiber content, which means that they are indigestible, therefore have no energy value for the body and support healthy intestinal activity. Nutrients are optimally absorbed and waste materials are disposed of well. Blood sugar levels rise only moderately or remain constant. As a result, food cravings are eliminated.
  • Due to its antioxidant effect, the considerable amount of vitamin C strengthens the immune system and protects body cells from damage. According to this, not only the general health, but also the skin is strengthened and the aging process is slowed down. In addition to the high vitamin C content, the strawberry also contains B vitamins and vitamin E.
  • It also contains important minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium, which are indispensable for general body functions.
  • Compared to other fruits, strawberries contain plenty of folate. As a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition shows, folate is not only a key to optimizing health, but also reduces the risk of disease in the elderly. Sufficient folate intake is also important for pregnant women, as it supports cell proliferation and blood formation.

Strawberries: they protect against cardiovascular disease and prevent cancer

Some studies also suggest that strawberries have a beneficial impact on various risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The anthocyanins (plant pigment) present in the strawberry are said to play a significant role in this. One study found that regular consumption of strawberries can improve overall heart health and lower blood pressure. For example, it was observed that overweight older women who ate more strawberries had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and were also less likely to die from these diseases than women who ate little or no strawberries. In addition, anthocyanins are said to have an antioxidant effect in the body and prevent cell damage. A study shows that certain sugar substitutes increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Strawberries also contain the phytochemical polyphenols. According to this, strawberries are also said to have a cancer-protective effect. According to the Federal Center for Nutrition (BzfE), polyphenols have properties that can counteract the development of tumors. Stiftung Warentest also confirms the positive effect of the secondary plant substance.

Phytochemicals are found in vegetables, fruits, legumes and cereal products. Even if they are not essential for life according to the BzfE, they promote health in a variety of ways. It is therefore advisable to eat as varied and balanced a diet as possible. (Vivian Werg)
