THE FIGARO. - Were you surprised by the result of the elections in Turkey and the resistance shown by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was announced to be vulnerable, if not defeated?

None of the factors used to predict his defeat proved relevant. Authoritarianism, usury, nepotism, negligence, inflation? It is an illusion shared by liberal and Marxist thinkers that social contingencies and economic circumstances always eventually prevail over symbolic convictions. Erdogan campaigned on identity pride, Kilicdaroglu on egalitarian tolerance. However, politics is also, or even primarily, the place of restorative emotions of negative affects. And all the more so when the religious fact is mixed in...
