Since the time that BMW beats around the bush without ever taking the plunge - several prototypes of previous generations have been developed - fans of the genre had finally resigned: the M3 Touring would remain a fantasy. It was to forget a few engineers with a passion pegged to the body who, by dint of obstinacy, ended up bending the direction. Hasn't Audi built much of the fame of its RS models on its sporty estates? In the wake of the sixth generation of its M3-M4 duo launched in 2021, BMW Motorsport is rewarding us with a Touring version.
Flash recoveries
BMW
From its passage in the M workshops, the silhouette of the Series 3 station wagon emerges transfigured: widened wings, M grille, side vents, four exhaust nozzles. The cabin is identical to that of the M3 with its large digital instrument tablet, thick rim steering wheel and bucket seats. Admittedly, by lengthening a few millimeters, the Touring weighs down 85 kg, but it is to the benefit of versatility. The trunk volume increases by only 20 liters (500 liters) compared to the sedan, but, thanks to the separately opening rear hatch, the M3 gains functionality. When folding the rear seats, the cargo capacity can reach 1,510 liters. You can't have everything: the sunroof or carbon roof is not available.
BMW
This hunting station wagon goes from tourist use to sports register in a fraction of a second. The 510 hp combined with an avalanche of torque allow lightning recoveries. The multitude of M programs allows you to customize the driving parameters according to your wishes and even neutralize the front-wheel drive to regain the agility of a rear-wheel drive. Probably the last testimony of a species in danger of extinction.
