The parents of Christian Glass, who was killed by Colorado police in 2022, will receive $19 million in damages. This is the highest amount of compensation of this type in the state, surpassing the $ 15 million obtained by the family of Elijah McClain in 2021.
Glass had called 911 after his truck got stuck on rocks. The emergency dispatcher said she was incoherent or hallucinating. When officers arrived, Glass refused to get out of the vehicle. After more than an hour of negotiations, the police decided to break into the vehicle and give him several electric shocks. At that point Glass pulled out a knife and one of the officers shot him.
In addition to monetary compensation, the agreement with the family states that Clear Creek County will establish a mental health crisis intervention team. You will also need to train and certify all your agents in these types of situations.
As part of the training, the state of Colorado will create a virtual reality scenario, based on the operation against Glass, to instruct its agents to unflaking stressful situations nonviolently.
