It is unfortunately a tragedy that is repeated every year when the sunny days return. Saturday, July 15, at the end of the day, a 7-year-old girl drowned in a private pool in the Costière district, near the Madeline, in Nice. Information from France Blue and Nice Matin confirmed to the Figaro police source Monday afternoon.
Several people on site tried to resuscitate the child once out of the water by performing a cardiac massage, but it was already too late. Quickly dispatched to the scene, firefighters could not do anything to save the victim either. An investigation has been opened by the Nice prosecutor's office to determine the causes of the tragedy, which remain unknown at this stage. According to BFM TV, the pool was nevertheless secure, as the law provides.
According to a survey by Public Health France, accidental drowning is responsible for about 1000 deaths each year (including about 400 during the summer period), making it the leading cause of death by accident in everyday life among people under 25 years of age. In June 2023 alone, 233 drownings were recorded across the country. And children under the age of 6 account for a quarter of accidental drownings whose main cause is insufficient supervision.

Private swimming pools partially or totally buried are now required to be equipped with at least one safety device. This can be a fall alarm, a safety blanket, a full-face shelter or a protective barrier.
