A 3-year-old boy driving a golf cart fatally struck a 7-year-old boy in Florida on Monday, authorities said.

The crash happened on private property in Lee County, which is in the southwestern part of the state, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, which detailed the incident in a news release obtained by TODAY.com.

The boy "was driving northbound, approaching a curve to the right near a residential property," the statement read, describing the 7-year-old boy "standing in the front yard of the residence."

"The front (of the golf cart) collided with (the 7-year-old)," according to the statement.

The boy suffered serious injuries and "was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead afterwards," it added.

Neither child has been identified, but the statement says both were from Fort Myers. Neither was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and the driver of the cart was not wearing a seat belt.

A homicide detective and an accident detective have been assigned to the case, according to the release.

TODAY.com contacted the Florida Highway Patrol for additional information, but did not get an immediate response.
