In 1992 a bomb detonated in front of the Israeli Embassy in our country. In this way, we entered the radar of international terrorism and Buenos Aires was at the height of Rome, London, Germany, Paris and Madrid besieged by attacks for several decades before.
However, the different fact is that in our capital it was a car bomb with a suicide bomber that caused the death of 22 people and was the prelude to what happened two years later. While in the European capitals were fundamentally nationalist-secular terrorist groups such as ETA, IRA or the Red Army, the act of terror that left the dead in Buenos Aires was done under the international-religious matrix.
The first time the world saw this type of terrorist action was in 1983 when 307 US and French soldiers of the Multinational Force in Lebanon were killed by two Hezbollah suicide car bombs against the headquarters of both delegations.
Another striking fact is that these soldiers were part of a peacekeeping operation approved by the UN to appease the civil war in which the nation of the cedars was plunged.
On the first 100 years of the creation of the AMIA (Argentine Israelite Mutual Association) which is mainly in charge of actions related to schools, culture and education, Hezbollah attacked our country again with the same stamp leaving a balance of 85 dead and hundreds injured.
The AMIA was founded in 1894 to give attention to Jewish immigrants who arrived in our country protected by the National Constitution and its preamble where it is offered "for all men of the world who want to live on Argentine soil" and the Embassy of Israel opened in our country to seal the bonds of friendship between both peoples.
It was precisely these two spirits that sought to break with the terrorist attacks since, on the one hand, Catholics and Jews, Argentines, Israelis, Bolivians, Uruguayans and another Italian were murdered and, on the other, an attempt was made to undermine the deep ties that unite Argentina with the Hebrew State. This makes it clear that terrorism does not discriminate and that the killer gene is in its DNA.
For decades it was thought that the way to fight terrorism was through the security forces of the States. Therefore, enormous material resources were invested for the training and training of police forces. In this regard, international police cooperation was also implemented as the central axis of this strategy. Several decades after the implementation of this approach, it has become clear that this only route has failed and that other mechanisms must be articulated.
In that regard, education has proved to be a central axis in the fight against this scourge, but also against other forms of racism, discrimination, anti-Semitism and xenophobia. Different levels of education should be used to raise awareness and disseminate the message of UNESCO, which promotes dialogue among civilizations, cultures, religions and faiths and invites civil society organizations to denounce terrorist acts as inexcusable.
Precisely, the terrorists sought to destroy the AMIA because it is an institution that works under those principles and for the Argentine common good without asking the men, women and children who seek their assistance their religious belonging, nationality or cultural group.
