If I were required to choose one subject that would become central content in all classes in the coming school year, I would choose, without any hesitation, to get to know the other out of an aspiration for Israeli unity.
It seems that there is no more important message to deal with at this time than the one concerning the connections between us, the removal of barriers, the deepening of familiarity. I believe that this lesson, which is so necessary for Israeli society as a whole and not just for the education system, is what can bring about important change at an uncritical time.

So how do we teach us to strive for unity at a time when polarization and division are deepening their grip and the rifts in Israeli society endanger us? The ability to maintain an open dialogue in the education system – from kindergartens to high schools – plays a central role.
Every student must see their educational institution as a protective, inclusive and understanding place, a home that allows them to express themselves in the most authentic and direct way, and also contains them without criticism or prejudice. Only out of a full and true sense of equality does social cohesion, a sense of belonging and mutual responsibility grow. I am confident that our excellent education system has the necessary tools to succeed in this mission.

The start of a new school year is an important opportunity to feel proud of the achievements of the Israeli education system. My position as President of the State of Israel invites me to a long list of visits to schools throughout Israeli society, and from each such visit I leave with a deep sense of appreciation for all the employees of the education system, who succeed in sacred work, dedication and a sense of mission to influence hundreds of thousands of students and shape our future.
I see their desire to touch the student, to go through a meaningful process with them, to promote excellence, and at the same time to be patient with those who have difficulties - and I am filled with appreciation and admiration.
At the start of the next school year, I am excited together with the girls and children returning to school, and hope that the new year will bring with it an opportunity to learn and teach unity - the lesson we all need. Today more than ever.
