"Israel will act to change the decision": On Sunday night, the Israeli Foreign Ministry reacted angrily to the decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which recognized the antiquities of Jericho as a World Heritage Site in "Palestine." The decision, which was officially made today in Riyadh at a conference attended by an Israeli delegation, was revealed in Israel Hayom earlier this month.
According to the Foreign Ministry: "Despite the message of the Secretary General of the UNESCO Heritage Committee, which separates the registration of the prehistoric site from Jewish and Christian sites in the region, and despite the many sincere efforts of UNESCO Secretary General Audrey Azoulay to balance the decision, the Foreign Ministry sees today's decision as another sign of the cynical use of UNESCO by the Palestinians and the politicization of the organization. Israel will work with its many friends in the organization to change all the distorted decisions that have been made."
The Knesset's Eretz Israel Caucus held a meeting in Tel Jericho earlier this month, during which Minister Orit Struk (Religious Zionism) addressed the committee: "We appeal to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay: Do not take upon yourself this disgrace. Don't reward heritage destroyers."
