The U.S. Senate approved a bill on Saturday night (Israel time) aimed at preventing a government shutdown and passing a temporary budget to negotiate a permanent budget.

The bill, which was initially approved by the House, passed the Senate by 88 votes to 9 and is expected to be signed by President Biden. Once approved by the president, the administration will be given 45 days to negotiate a fixed, bipartisan budget.
The proposal passed about three hours before the deadline, thus preventing a shutdown of the US government, which would have led to the cancellation of essential services, delayed payment of salaries to American employees and soldiers, damage to aid programs for citizens, closure of public sites, and was even expected to lead to a change in the US credit rating, which would have dramatically hurt the US economy.

The 45-day budget includes coverage for natural disasters, but does not include U.S. aid to Ukraine. The approved motion was introduced by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who faced rebellion from his Republican colleagues. The proposal passed after debates within the Republican Party that controls the House of Representatives over the right budget package for the federal government.
