Hero of Israel has passed away: Brig. Gen. (res.) Ephraim Hiram (Pichotka) passed away today (Tuesday) at the age of 89. Hiram served as the eighth head of Ramat Hasharon's council. In the past, among his positions in the IDF, he served as commander of the Galilee Division when he was a brigadier general.

The Ramat Hasharon municipality said in a statement that as a child he survived the Holocaust as a child when he was smuggled out of the Warsaw ghetto just before the deportations to the extermination camps began, and later lived under a false identity with a Polish family. After the Holocaust he immigrated to Israel and a few years later enlisted in the IDF and served for three decades as an officer.

He was affiliated with the Paratroopers Brigade, parachuted into Mitla in 1956 and established the famous 202nd Battalion. The Battle of Mitla took place in 1956 during Operation Kadesh between the Paratroopers Brigade and the Egyptian Army at the Al-Hitan crossing, and near it in the western Sinai Peninsula, on October 31.

After his release, he turned to the private sector and then in 1988 ran for mayor of Ramat Hasharon and won. He served for about a decade.
