German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned pro-Palestinian celebrations following the Islamist Hamas' large-scale attack on Israel. "We do not accept it when the heinous attacks against Israel are celebrated here on our streets," the SPD politician said in Berlin on Sunday. He added: "The suffering, the destruction, the death of so many people cannot be a cause for joy for anyone."
Berlin - His thoughts are "with the citizens of Israel in these difficult hours, who have to mourn many victims," said the Federal Chancellor, adding: "Germany stands by their side."
In Berlin's Neukölln district, about 50 people had gathered on Saturday evening for what police said was a pro-Palestinian demonstration. The police checked the people and took appropriate measures, said a police spokesman. A video on Instagram shared by the anti-Israel network Samidoun showed a group chanting slogans. The organization had distributed sweet pastries to passers-by on Saturday afternoon, "in celebration of the victory of the resistance," as it wrote on Instagram.
As of Sunday afternoon, at least 500 people have been killed in Israel's large-scale Hamas attacks from the Gaza Strip, according to medical sources.
