The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has accelerated the update of the complaint form. For the first time, it clarifies that Article Six of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits certain forms of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Today, Second Lord Doug Emhoff and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona will meet with senior officials of Jewish organizations to discuss the growing anti-Semitism in institutions of higher education. Later this week, Cardona and White House domestic policy adviser Nira Tanden will meet with Jewish students. Education Department officials have visited schools in San Francisco, St. Louis and Maine in recent weeks to learn about antisemitism, and are also scheduled to visit New York and Baltimore.
According to the Anti-Defamation League, since the massacre carried out by Hamas near Gaza, the number of antisemitic incidents in the United States has jumped by 388% compared to the same period last year. As of last Wednesday, more than 100 colleges and universities had planned marches in solidarity with the Palestinians.
