  • It is the 166th Tölzer Leonhardifahrt, which takes place this Monday (6 November).
  • Thousands of spectators are expected along the pilgrimage route to Calvary.
  • Almost 70 festively decorated wagons - drawn exclusively by four-in-hand - take part.

Bad Tölz - Weather luck for the pilgrims: In Bad Tölz there is bright sunshine during the 166th Leonhardi ride. At 9 a.m. sharp, the splendidly decorated floats set off in the bathing area - led by the pioneers Benedikt Hanus, Peter Fast and Johannes Kaufmann. At the moment, the cars are still on their way to the installation site. Many spectators already line the streets along the pilgrimage route.

67 cars at Leonhardifahrt in Bad Tölz

The pioneers will be followed by the table wagon, in which the clergy around the city priest Peter Demmelmair have taken their seats. In the next car sit the city councillors, who traditionally wear frock coats and top hats. One of them is Michael Lindmair, who, along with Anton Mayr, is one of the two Leonhardiladers. By waving his cylinder, Lindmair is given the signal to start the pilgrimage at 9 a.m.

A total of 67 floats are taking part in this year's pilgrimage. Among the pilgrims, married women wear shawls, unmarried women bodices. Most of the participants are farmers from Tölz and the surrounding area, although historically there are also wagons from the Lake Starnberg area, Mittenwald or Jachenau, for example.

Cardinal Marx celebrates Divine Service at Leonhardifahrt

Once again this year, thousands of visitors will line the path of pilgrimage, which leads over the Isar bridge and through the market street up to the Calvary. There, the teams receive the church's blessing and line up on the large Leonhardi meadow. Cardinal Reinhard Marx conducts the festive service.

The Tölzer Leonhardifahrt was first documented for the year 1772, and in its current form it has taken place annually since 1856. In 2020 and 2021, the pilgrimage was cancelled due to Corona.
