Seven days after he fell on the first candle of Hanukkah, a memorial service was held today (Thursday) for Sergeant Major (res.) Gal Meir Eisenkot, a soldier in the 699th Battalion of the 551st Brigade, and son of Gadi Eisenkot, former minister and chief of staff.

"Choose life, continue to be happy," Eisenkot Sr. said at the memorial service for his son. "Every generation is required for these tasks, and your excellent generation is caught up in the worst national disaster that the State of Israel has experienced since its establishment; Carry out the tasks of your generation, take care of yourselves, and I hope that we will influence the fact that correct and good decisions will be made for the future of the State of Israel."

The bereaved father, Gadi Eizenkot, added in front of his son's grave. "The pain is great, it's huge. But we are a happy and strong family, and if he could say another word to me he would say: Choose life, keep being happy. And he lives with us in our hearts. He's been like that in his life, and he'll stay that way – as far as we're concerned – forever."

Excellent generation

"A word to his teammates - another circle to which he connected in an extraordinary way: you are still in uniform, Gal was killed as a reserve soldier, you are on missions - every generation is required for these missions - and your generation was caught up in this mission, in my opinion, in the most shocking event, the worst national disaster that the State of Israel has experienced since its establishment on October 7."

"When you hear politicians, not that I have anything against politicians," the father said with a smile, "you can be tempted to think that even if we put all our power down on them, it will be over. The war on terror continues in the place of the state and even before. The first recorded terror victim in the Land of Israel took place in October 1851, it was Rabbi Shlomo Zalman, a goldsmith who went to pray in the Hibbat Zion synagogue and was murdered with knives on the way, and since then we have been competing to maintain a state here since it was established, and what we see in these two months is what a great generation there is in the country."
