"Our account lost more than 7,000 followers in December," the museum said in a tweet. "We continue to ask for your involvement. You are creating this amazing community and helping us keep the memory alive. Support the Auschwitz museum and echo our voice."

Users did not remain indifferent to the unusual request. "This is one of my favorite accounts on my feed," wrote Andrew Bridges. "It's a constant reminder of what true evil looks like. I hope to come visit Auschwitz in 2024! It's on the list of targets," were among the many comments the post received.

Israelis on Twitter claimed that users had "removed a follower" from the museum in protest of the IDF's war against Hamas. Yaakov Libby wrote: "You know exactly who are the thousands of followers who suddenly are disturbed by the memory of Auschwitz to the point of infulfill. Let's give them back by strengthening the memory of the Holocaust. This is part of the answer against the new Nazis of 2024. Put a follower and share the account."
