The people of Thuringia celebrated the turn of the year without any major incidents. In many places, however, there were fires, several people were injured by firecrackers.

Erfurt - The people of Thuringia celebrated New Year's Eve with lots of fireworks and largely peacefully. However, there were several injuries from firecrackers and in many places smaller fires, mainly from rockets, the police reported on Monday. There have been no "serious operations," said a spokesman for the situation center of the Interior Ministry in Erfurt. It was a quieter New Year's Eve than 2023. In a celebratory mood, however, some people had spoken strongly of alcohol, reported the state police headquarters.

"This, in turn, led in many cases to improper use of pyrotechnics, physical altercations and numerous fires."

By early Monday morning, police said they had registered 25 cases of suspected assault, 68 violations of pyrotechnic use and 11 pyrotechnic-related property damages, as well as 69 fires.

In the Arnstadt district of Behringen, a firecracker exploded in the hand of a 16-year-old when it was lit. The teenager had lost a finger phalanx in the accident. In Ebeleben in the Kyffhäuser district, a 27-year-old man was seriously injured in the face by a firecracker on Saturday. According to the police, he had handled homemade and prohibited firecrackers. He had to be taken to hospital by rescue helicopter.

A large number of fires had to be extinguished. For example, a single-family house in the Windischholzhausen district of Erfurt went up in flames. According to the police, the three residents were able to get to safety. In Schmalkalden (Schmalkalden-Meiningen district), a double carport with a photovoltaic system on the roof burned. The car that was parked there was destroyed. The damage was estimated at around 110,000 euros. It was not immediately clear whether there was a connection between the fires and the New Year's Eve celebrations.

In Greiz, youths aged 15 and 18 shot rockets and firecrackers at a group of people shortly after midnight, according to police. Four people were injured, including an <>-year-old child, police said on Monday.

The 18-year-old spent the rest of the night in police custody, the younger was taken to his parents. Both youths are being investigated for dangerous bodily harm.

In Bad Liebenstein in the Wartburgkreis, a hotel guest threw a firecracker into a group of people. Five people were slightly injured. In the Saale-Holzland district and other regions of Thuringia, it was mainly rockets that caused smaller fires. In Bürgel (Saale-Holzland district) a rocket probably set fire to a tree. Used clothing containers also caught fire.
