The New Year has been welcomed in Saxony with a lot of fireworks. For the most part, it remained peaceful. Nevertheless, people were injured and there was even one death.
Leipzig/Boxberg - According to the police in Saxony, the turn of the year was mostly peaceful - nevertheless, there was one death, one injured and many property damage on New Year's Eve. The fire brigades were called out to numerous fires, some of which were triggered by pyrotechnics.
22-year-old dies from illegal fireworks
In Boxberg in Upper Lusatia, a 22-year-old was killed when a banned ball bomb was detonated. The young man suffered such serious injuries in the explosion on New Year's Eve that he died at the scene of the accident despite rescue attempts, the Görlitz police department said on Monday. The firecracker from abroad went off immediately when the 22-year-old put fire to the fuse. A companion of the same age had suffered minor injuries. A crisis intervention team looked after friends and relatives of the deceased.
Numerous other injuries caused by firecrackers
Police and firefighters reported numerous other injuries caused by pyrotechnics on New Year's Day. In the Löbauer district of Schönbach, a 26-year-old blew off his left thumb when a firecracker exploded in his hand. In Leipzig, a 25-year-old man was taken to hospital unconscious after a firecracker thrown into a crowd detonated in front of him. Two six- and ten-year-old children were also slightly injured in Leipzig by an overturned fireworks battery, an eleven-year-old child suffered minor injuries to his eye from a firecracker.
Large-scale police operation in Leipzig
The police had reinforced themselves on New Year's Eve with many additional forces. The largest operation took place in Leipzig, where officers from Thuringia and the Federal Police were also called in. In the left-wing trendy district of Connewitz, several fires were lit on the streets, a supermarket was pelted with stones, and a police station was also attacked. In the Grünau district, according to police, officers were pelted with pyrotechnics from a crowd of 200 people. A firecracker exploded under a patrol car, causing significant damage. Two policewomen were slightly injured, but remained fit for duty.
Mostly peaceful New Year's Eve in Dresden
In the state capital Dresden, people celebrated mostly peacefully, according to the police and fire brigade. The police classified 22 bodily injuries, 19 property damage and 7 fires as "typical New Year's Eve incidents". Four times, people had resisted law enforcement officers. No officer was injured. According to the fire department, there were also no attacks on rescue workers in Dresden.

Numerous blown-up vending machines
From all parts of the Free State, the police reported property damage on New Year's Eve. A number of cigarette vending machines were blown up - among others in Neukirch/Lusatia, in Meissen, Markkleeberg near Leipzig and Wurzen.
