Germany's fourth-best tennis pro had to overcome many hurdles on his way to success.

Interesting facts about Daniel Altmaier's career.

Munich – Daniel Altmaier, born on November 12, 1998 in Kempen, has consistently ranked in the top 100 of the ATP world rankings since November 29, 2021 as currently the fourth best German player overall (as of April 26, 2022; note).

Only Alexander Zverev, Oscar Otte and Dominik Koepfer are currently ahead of Altmaier (ATP 67).

This is mainly due to successes such as

B. in July 2021 in Braunschweig his first triumph in a Challenger tournament, also in July 2021 his first two ATP Tour semi-finals in Umag and Kitzbühel, in November 2021 the tournament victory at the Challenger tournament in Puerto Vallarta (MEX), the final at the Challenger tournament in Phoenix (March 2022) or at the beginning of February 2022 the quarter-finals at the ATP 250 tournament in Pune, India.

If you ask Daniel Altmaier about the most important driver of his career,

you immediately get the answer: "I'm a family man.

For me, family is everything.” Nothing is currently known about a girlfriend.

Daniel Altmaier – his family, his background

Daniel Altmaier is the son of a Ukrainian father (Jurij) and a Russian mother (Galina).

"The family is very big," he said years ago in an interview with

Bild am Sonntag.

“We are 80 to 100 people when we meet.

My grandpa already has five siblings alone.” He “learned a lot of discipline” from his grandparents early on.

His father, a former amateur boxer, introduced him to tennis.

"He started working hard with me because we didn't have the money to finance tennis just for fun," said Altmaier.

His father had no idea about tennis at the time, he "had to read up on it first".

He himself was rather inexperienced: "Before the first tournament, I didn't even know how to count the points." Daniel Altmaier was considered a great talent early on:

  • In 2008 he became German champion in the U10 age group.

  • He turned professional in 2014, and two years later he won his first ITF Future tournament in Belgium.

  • In 2017 there were first notable successes on the ATP tour: As a qualifier, Altmaier only failed in the quarter-finals at the Antalya lawn tournament.

  • By 2020, he wanted to be in the top 100 in the world.

On the way there, but also in the more recent past, Altmaier was repeatedly slowed down by injuries: in 2018 he experienced his worst year when injuries to his abdominal muscles and shoulder put him out of action for almost the entire season.

  • Corona restrictions and an adductor injury in a Challenger tournament shortly before the French Open made sporting life difficult for him in 2020.

Nevertheless, Altmaier made his Grand Slam debut two years ago in Paris by reaching the round of 16: In the third round he defeated Matteo Berrettini 6:2, 7:6, 6:4 and thus for the first time a top 10 Player.

In the round of 16 he lost 2:6, 5:7, 2:6 to the Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta.

Daniel Altmaier – not everyone knows that about the young star

  • One of his best friends is the three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, who has always stood by him during injury phases: "To have a friendly relationship with such a top player who has achieved an incredible amount in our sport is really something special .”

Daniel Altmaier also likes to copy Wawrinka’s gesture of “index finger to forehead” after successfully completing points.

Which is supposed to mean: “Up here, in the head, the path to victory begins”.

After strong hits, Altmaier cheers himself on - also based on Stan Wawrinka with "Allez".

"When I watched him, he kept saying 'Allez, Stan.'

    I copy that a bit.”

One of his success factors is the fitness training led by coach Francisco Yunis

: "With our fitness program, even Rocky would have collapsed."

then be brought back to Milan.

  • One of his favorite hobbies is fishing: "I relax best on the water."

Daniel Altmaier – his future

Daniel Altmaier has very precise ideas for the time after tennis.

In an interview with the German specialist magazine

tennismagazin

, he revealed in 2020: "It doesn't matter whether I have little money or 500 million euros in my account at the end of my career: I will definitely not stop working.

Stocks, real estate or whatever in sports, I'll find something.

It is important that my children see me work and learn.

I want my kids to know more than me.

This is how families should become wiser over generations.”
