After four surgeries in three years, the one who surprised at the Rio Olympics when she picked up the gold, announced that she could no longer meet the physical demands: "Sometimes good things come to an end"

Former Olympic tennis champion Monica Foiege announced tonight (Monday through Tuesday) her retirement from the sport, saying "my body had enough" after four surgeries in three years.

Foig was the first Puerto Rican to win an Olympic gold medal in any sport, when she stunned the world number 2 at the time, Angelique Kerber from Germany in the final of the 2016 Rio Games.

"For the past 28 years tennis has been the most regular thing I have had. It has given me some of the most exciting and memorable experiences I could ever ask for," she wrote on social media.

"But sometimes good things come to an end. Today I announce my retirement from tennis. After a hard three-year struggle with injuries and four surgeries, my body has had enough."

During her career, Foig won two titles, and also won in 2014 in Strasbourg.

She reached a record high in her career a few weeks after the historic win, when she was ranked 27th in the world.

But injuries have prevented the 28-year-old Feugeot from winning since reaching the quarter-finals in Luxembourg in October 2019.

She tried to make a comeback in Madrid last April but lost in the first round, retiring in the first set of her opening game at San Malo.

During the recent French Open, she was employed as a commentator on local television.
