Thuringian state parliament: FDP holds apparently only one vote over the five-percent hurdle

2019-10-31T11:25:44.834Z

The FDP is extremely close to the Thuringian state parliament - or not? According to media reports, the result has now been downgraded by four votes.

Already on the night of the state election in Thuringia, the FDP had to tremble for entry into the state parliament, with only five votes, they finally came across the five-percent hurdle. Now, according to a report by the "Thüringer Allgemeine Zeitung", the constituency committee in Weimar has corrected the number of votes cast there for the Liberals downwards. Instead of 1662 votes they have therefore received only 1658 votes - thus the FDP would be only one vote above the five-percent hurdle.

The Left had been the strongest force in the state elections last Sunday. She won according to preliminary final result 31 percent of the vote. This was followed by the AfD with 23.4 percent of the vote, in third place was the CDU with 21.8 percent of the vote. The SPD got only 8.2 percent, the Greens reached 5.2 percent of the vote.

Further voting losses for FDP possible

The previous red-red-green coalition has thus lost its majority in the state parliament. Coalition formation is extremely difficult. CDU and FDP have already excluded cooperation with the left. Conceivable now would be a red-red-green minority government led by former Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow or a minority government of the so-called Zimbabwe coalition of CDU, FDP, SPD and Greens.

If the FDP flies out of the state parliament, that would change the majorities once again. Further voting losses for the FDP are possible - currently all city and constituency committees meet to examine the election results. The official final result is expected on 7th November.

In addition, according to MDR, the public prosecutor's office of Erfurt, a bill for electoral fraud against an FDP politician. Accordingly, he had an influence on an election assistant. FDP country chief Thomas Kemmerich rejects the allegations.
