The story that has blossomed into a success story in Schongau within four years can still be written. New helpers have been found for the clothing store in Köhlerstadl.

Schongau - It is a real boulder that has fallen from Sonja's heart. The relief can be seen formally. Last year, dark clouds came up to have to close the popular clothing store after four years. Now there is sunshine around the facility in the Köhlerstadl.

Sonja Zeug and Karin Toth, who set up this facility in 2015, had reached their health limits last year. For both of them it was a matter of stepping down, the work literally grew over their heads despite some helpers.

At that time, Zeug and Toth followed the influx of asylum seekers to Schongau and the surrounding area. "We just wanted to help these people quickly and unbureaucratically," the two recall. They realized that clothing and footwear were missing on every corner.

The collection campaign of the two started. “Thanks to the generous support of the city in terms of space, we were able to nest in the back of the Köhlerstadl,” says Zeug. Shelves and clothes racks were organized, garments sorted by size for men, women and children. "The initiative was very well received by the asylum seekers," recalls Toth - and made the round in public.

Therefore, the clothing store was opened to the public from February 2016. Every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. was the opening time and was very busy. However, these two hours were not enough for the volunteers. The work was almost a full-time job. Clothes had to be accepted, examined and sorted, and unusable goods had to be disposed of. “It always kept us busy, as we were only closed during the holidays,” says Zeug.

After four years the air was out

So after four years the two women were kind of out of breath. Especially because there were no new helpers. That is why they both said at the beginning of September last year that they would quit their voluntary work. That would have meant the end of the popular facility.

A call via various media and a call for help to Mayor Falk Sluyterman, however, had an effect: “Surprisingly, many women from Schongau and the surrounding area who offered their help came forward - of course on a voluntary basis. And it was also possible to find a new contact person in Christine Venturi, from whom all the threads come together from now on. She has been using her creativity for the clothing store for several months.

Visitors from all walks of life

Relief from Sonja Zeug and Karin Toth, who will now help even further under these circumstances. “Our visitors are from all social classes. We want to reach all people who have to manage their lives with little money. "

This is very important to Christine Venturi. In doing so, she mentions that nobody has to identify themselves. Her request also goes to social institutions and care centers to point out that there is a clothing store.
