Update of March 15, 5:15 p.m .: The latest forecasts for the 2020 local elections in Bavaria showed trends for the larger cities. The regional candidates clearly played a major role in this. Overall, however, some trends can be expected for the federal state. A general forecast is that the Greens can have hopes that municipalities and counties will win more mandates than in 2014. Their general upturn is likely to be noticeable. In 2020, the AfD will move into Bavaria's municipal parliaments to a much greater extent than before.

Forecasts from Nuremberg, Ingolstadt, Regensburg, Munich

Update of March 11, 2020: In the last days before the 2020 local elections in Bavaria, forecasts are available from individual cities. The picture looks very different regionally. In the city of Munich, surveys predict that the incumbent mayor, Dieter Reiter (SPD), can count on a clear majority.

According to a poll from Nuremberg *, the SPD is at risk of falling. Mayor Ulrich Maly (SPD) is not running for election again. His possible successor from the SPD is Thorsten Brehm, who was only forecast 28 percent of the vote. However, he is still clearly ahead of his CSU pursuer Marcus König. A runoff vote would be the logical consequence for these numbers.

Even in Ingolstadt, the incumbent cannot hope for an election victory in the first round. 33 percent are predicted Christian Lösel (CSU). Presumably, several controversies have affected poll values in Ingolstadt *.

One of the most curious constellations arises in the OB election in Regensburg. The former mayor Joachim Wolbergs (SPD) was suspended and replaced by Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer (also SPD). Wolbergs now starts again with its own list and wants to become OB again. According to the latest poll from Regensburg, he and his successor are on par with voters.

Local elections in Bavaria 2020: poll shows most important criterion for many voters

First report: Munich - Who will have the political majorities in Bavaria over the next six years? A question that is not easy to answer. The 2020 municipal election in Bavaria is about 39,000 political mandates in 2056 independent Bavarian municipalities. But there are indications: For example, the Bavarian Radio had 1004 voters in Bavaria polled for the “BayernTrend” in January before the election.

The result: If there had been a state election at that time, the Greens could have counted on 25 percent of the vote. The CSU would have reached 36 percent . Free voters and AfD would have come to 10 percent each, the FDP to only 4 percent - and they would have flown out of the Bavarian state parliament. This BR poll is also bad news for the SPD: It dropped to 7 percent of the vote. The left would have got 3 percent .

But the calculation is not that simple if you choose at the municipal level. Accurate polls on local elections in Bavaria are only available for larger cities, for example for Munich *. What can be expected in small communities cannot be derived directly from the national surveys.

Poll on the local elections in Bavaria: CSU and free voters receive praise - Greens as well

A coalition of CSU and free voters has governed the Bavarian state parliament * since 2018. 61 percent of those surveyed stated in the “BayernTrend” that they were satisfied with their government work. The Greens did the best in terms of the opposition's performance: 48 percent supported their work.

The makers of the survey emphasized that two months before the date of the local elections in Bavaria 2020 *, the level of interest among the population was high. 74 percent of those questioned were "very strongly" (31 percent) or "strongly" (43 percent) interested in the topic. The remaining 26 percent therefore had “no pronounced” or “no interest at all” in the Bavarian elections.

An interesting point of the poll * on local elections in Bavaria: Bavarian voters do not only pay attention to the candidate among mayors and district administrators (direct election). The person of the politician is also important to them in the local parliaments, where they can promote certain candidates by means of the accumulation and variegation *. 85 percent stated that they were guided by their decision. 75 percent attach great importance to the content of statements made by the parties and lists, the survey says.

Greens in the poll High before 2020 local elections: ambition for 700 new mandates

The Greens hope for the top poll values before the local elections in Bavaria 2020: They want to get around 700 new mandates, as parliamentary group leader Ludwig Hartmann explained. A total of 2500 green local politicians should be reached. The party wants to compete with lists in all Bavarian cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants.

In the last local elections six years ago, the Greens achieved their best result in the Free State with 10.2 percent. In the 2019 European election * they achieved 31.2 percent in Munich - well ahead of the SPD. The CSU gained almost five percent of the vote in the state capital in 2014 - however, the party achieved nationwide less than 40 percent for the first time in decades. For the SPD there was a historically poor result in Bavaria with 20.7 percent.
